Cold Protection for the Florida Manatee?
That's right! It may be surprising to learn that 20% of Florida manatee deaths are from cold shock. Changing weather patterns can isolate animals in shallow water or from shelter. If the body temperature drops too much, shock may result and require emergency care. Even if rescued, animals can become immune suppressed and at risk of infection.
Veterinary experts do not fully understand the impact of environmental stressors on manatee health. Research helps to bridge that gap and save these manatees and many other species.
